Milan

Milan is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and it is very easy to visit it since it has three airports that have flights from all over the world and direct transportation from the airports to the city.

The city of Milan has a long history with many conquerors through the centuries until it became a free city of the Independent Italy in the 17th century. Milan under the occupation of various conquerors such as the Romans, the Lombards, the Spanish and the Austrians managed to flourish. The arts, science, poetry and literature prospered in Milan and even though it was occupied for many centuries it accepted positive influences especially in architecture.

Nowadays Milan is a large metropolis with hectic rhythms and a modern way of life.  The locals enjoy every minute of their feverish everyday lives and have fun all the time. The city of Milan is full of contrasts that are perfectly combined with each other creating the city’s unique character.

Amongst the modern buildings in the city there are many monuments surviving the passing of time, standing with dignity and adding a mystical air in the city. The most famous surviving cathedral in Milan is Duomo which was built in the 12th century and demonstrates the magnificence of the Gothic architecture. Another well known building in Milan is La Scala, a 16th century building that until today is the city’s opera house.


There are also many other monuments in the city that are all worth visiting and also many churches such as Santa Maria delle Grazie which except its beautiful 15th century architecture it has another important value, Leonardo da Vinci painted in its dining room one of the most famous paintings in the entire world that created many debates, the “Last Supper”. There are several important churches in the city and some of the most magnificent are Basilica Sant’ Ambrogio, Basilica Sant’ Eustorgio and Basilica San Lorenzo Maggiore.

The city has a number of palaces or Castellos that have become museums hosting very important exhibitions. One of these museums is the Museum of Ancient Art which is housed in Castello Sforzesco and has a wonderful collection of statues. Another one is the Royal Palace which used to be the residence of the prominent rulers of the city and now is a museum. But there are many more museums with outstanding collections such as Pinacoteca Ambrosiana that is maybe the oldest building in the city that has an exceptional collection of Botticelli, Raffaello and Leonardo da Vinci’s works, moreover other important museums are Pinacoteca di Breta and Cenacolo Vinciano.

Milan is a cosmopolitan city filled with restaurants that serve all kinds of dishes from all over the world. But do try to taste some of the traditional Milanese cuisine which is found in many restaurants around the city. The culinary customs in Milan have many types of cheese mixed with the main ingredients creating rich flavors. The Milanese love cheese, rice, vegetables, and salami.

There are many delicatessen shops where you can buy many eatables as well as some of the best wines in Italy and if you are planning to shop Milan is going to be your favourite place. Milan is the Mecca of haute couture and has numerous shops and boutiques.

It is very easy to wander around the city, but if you do not want to walk a lot Milan as a modern city has all the types of public transportation. The metro lines can transfer you anywhere in the city whereas if you prefer to admire the city from above ground you can use the busses and the trams. The tickets are not expensive and there means of transport operate until midnight.

Milan by night is absolutely brilliant, full of bars and club for all tastes with different types of music and decors. The Milanese adore going out and they prefer diversity in their nights out, therefore the city is bursting with special and different bars and clubs. Whichever place you choose to spend your evening you will certainly enjoy yourselves.
